First in Texas
First Public Institution of Higher Education in Texas
The Texas Legislature established the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the first public university in Texas, on April 17, 1871. Classes began in 1876.
First in Texas to Spend $1 Billion on Research
Texas A&M became the first university in Texas to surpass $1 billion in total research expenditures when it spent $1.131 billion in fiscal year 2020. Our university spent $1.278 billion on research in fiscal year 2023.
